1) The Degrees of Reading Power, DRP

The Degrees of Reading Power, or the DRP, is a test for first English language speakers, i.e. people who learned to speak English at home as a child, were educated in English and now live and work in English.

  • It is a test that determines how well you understand what you’re reading.
  • There are 70 multiple choice questions.
  • As you work through the test, the passages become more challenging.
  • This section of the test is untimed, that is, you will have as much time as you need to write the test. On average, most complete the test in 2 hours.
2) The Program Specific Assessment, PSA

The Program Specific Assessment is a textbook reading assessment and a written response.

  • It tests your comprehension of a reading from your RRC program.
  • You will have 90 minutes to complete this section.
  • It includes a test of your ability to skim and scan for detail, and to summarize the meaning of the reading selection.
    • One summary paragraph of 5-7 sentences is required.
  • It tests your writing skills through a 5-paragraph writing task.
  • You will be assessed on your ability to:
    • Produce basic, structured academic paragraphs on presented and familiar topics.
    • Effectively introduce, support and conclude an idea within a 5-paragraph structure and within each paragraph.
    • Correctly employ grammar, sentence structure, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, tone, word choice and usage.
